HIABs and Moffetts: understanding the differences

At first glance, many of the lifting vehicles used within the builders’ merchant sector appear to do the same job. In essence, they help transfer heavy building materials safely from the merchant’s vehicle to the customer’s site. But in reality, the skills needed to operate a HIAB or a Moffett can be very different.

When merchants recruit drivers or arrange temporary cover, it can be tempting to assume that anyone with the appropriate licence can step straight into any role. In fact, each type of equipment brings its own operating techniques, safety considerations and working environment.

A HIAB driver is responsible for operating a lorry-mounted crane, often lifting heavy or awkward products into locations where access is restricted. Every lift requires careful planning, accurate load assessment and a clear understanding of the surrounding environment. Customers frequently expect materials to be placed precisely where they are needed, making communication and judgement just as valuable as technical competence – especially on challenging sites where space is at a premium.

A Moffett operator faces a different challenge. Rather than using a crane, they transport a truck-mounted forklift to site before unloading and manoeuvring it – often around uneven ground, confined spaces and active construction sites. Balance, visibility and awareness become particularly important, especially when carrying heavy, palletised products.

Some drivers hold numerous qualifications that cover them to use several types of lifting equipment, but each requires its own operating techniques and practical experience. Although there are drivers who hold multiple qualifications and regularly operate different vehicle types, experience on one system should never be assumed to translate automatically to another.

The builders’ merchant sector has become increasingly specialised over recent years. Product ranges have expanded, delivery locations have become more demanding and customer expectations continue to rise. The driver is no longer simply transporting materials. They are operating expensive equipment, working safely around customers and representing the merchant’s reputation with every delivery.

This makes matching the right driver to the right vehicle more important than ever. Qualifications remain the starting point, but practical experience, recent operating history and familiarity with merchant deliveries often make the difference between a routine delivery and one that creates delays, safety concerns or unnecessary risk.
