Why deliveries still matter in the AI age

We were thrilled to attend the recent NMBS Conference in Alicante as a Platinum Sponsor. The fantastic three-day event was a chance to meet many of our customers from across the industry, as well as to learn more about the key challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
The conference programme focused on Artificial Intelligence and the impact it is likely to have on the builders’ merchant sector as a whole as customer expectations change.
From stock management and forecasting to customer service and administration, AI technology is already changing how many businesses operate. It has the potential to improve efficiencies, reduce repetitive tasks and help merchants make better-informed decisions.
The introduction of AI is bringing with it a fundamental step change in society, and whenever new technology emerges, there is often speculation about which jobs may disappear and which will remain.
Driving is frequently highlighted as a role that could eventually be transformed by automation, but the reality is perhaps more complicated than it may seem.
There is no doubt that technology will continue to play a bigger role in transport. Route planning is becoming smarter. Vehicle safety systems are becoming more sophisticated. Data is helping fleet operators improve efficiency and reduce costs. But delivering building materials is not the same as transporting parcels between distribution hubs – which is why experienced merchant drivers are in such demand.
Merchant deliveries involve complex environments, challenging site conditions, customer interactions and decisions that often require human judgement. Drivers regularly assess access restrictions, coordinate with site teams, operate specialist equipment such as HIABs and Moffetts, and solve problems in real time when conditions change.
A computer may be able to identify the fastest route to a destination, but – for the time being at least – it can’t easily deal with a partially closed construction site, an unexpected delivery restriction or a customer who needs advice on where materials should be safely unloaded.
More importantly, merchant drivers play a role that extends far beyond simply transporting products from site A to site B.
Your drivers are often the face of your business. They build relationships with customers, represent the values of the business and contribute directly to the quality of service being delivered. Many customers know their regular driver by name and see them as a trusted part of the supply chain. That human connection still matters, especially in an industry that has always been built firmly on relationships.
This does not mean the profession is completely immune to technological change. Over time, automation will undoubtedly influence many aspects of logistics and transport. Drivers who embrace new technology, develop additional skills and continue learning will be best placed to thrive.
What it does mean is that the merchant sector is still one of the areas where people continue to make a real difference every day.
Every housing development, school, hospital, warehouse and infrastructure project relies on the building materials arriving safely and on time. Behind every successful delivery is a skilled professional ensuring that happens.
At Specialist Driver Resourcing, we see this every day through the work our drivers undertake right across the UK. The need for experienced, knowledgeable people to deliver building materials safely, professionally and reliably looks set to remain for many years to come.
